Position: Full-Time Surgical Technologist
Location: UPMC Hamot - Cardiac Cath Lab
Job Description:
We are seeking a dedicated and skilled Surgical Technologist to
join our Cardiac Cath Lab team at UPMC Hamot. In this role, you
will assist the surgical team in performing a variety of tasks in
the operating room, ensuring sterile environments and supporting
the surgeon and surgical assistants during procedures. The ideal
candidate will have experience with cardiac procedures and be able
to maintain a high level of organization and attention to
detail.
We are currently offering SIGN-ON BONUSES for all full-time
Surgical Technologist positions! The amount of the sign-on bonus is
dependent upon your years of Surgical Technology experience.
0-1 years of experience: 2-year commitment $10,000; 3-year
commitment $12,000
1-2 years of experience: 2-year commitment $12,000; 3-year
commitment $17,000
2+ years of experience: 2-year commitment $15,000; 3-year
commitment $25,000
Key Responsibilities:
- Pre-Operative Duties:
- Prepare the operating room by setting up sterile surgical
instruments, equipment, and sterile solutions.
- Assemble both sterile and non-sterile equipment, ensuring all
necessary instruments are available and functional.
- Ensure patient safety by performing necessary preoperative
tasks such as preparing the patient (washing, shaving, ensuring
aseptic incision sites), transporting the patient to the operating
room, and positioning them on the operating table.
- Intra-Operative Support:
- Pass surgical instruments, sponges, sutures, and other sterile
supplies to the surgeon and surgical assistants in an efficient and
timely manner.
- Assist with retraction, cutting sutures, sponging, or
suctioning the operative site under the supervision of the
surgeon.
- Count sponges, needles, supplies, and instruments to ensure
none are left behind.
- Assist with handling special trays, graft materials, and
recording patient data during surgery.
- Post-Operative Duties:
- Help with the transfer of patients to the recovery room.
- Clean and restock the operating room in preparation for the
next procedure.
- Dispose of specimens appropriately and assist with the
preparation and application of dressings.
- Ensure the operating room is ready for the next case,
maintaining a sterile environment at all times.
- Team Collaboration:
- Assist the surgical team in donning sterile gowns and
gloves.
- Support the surgical team in maintaining a safe, clean, and
sterile environment throughout the procedure.
- Demonstrate alertness to safety, explosive hazards, and aseptic
technique to prevent infection and maintain patient safety. We

- Education and Certification:
- Must have completed a program sponsored by a nationally
recognized institutional or programmatic accreditation and maintain
certification;
- OR have completed an appropriate military training
program;
- OR maintain certification from an accredited program;
- OR was employed as a surgical technologist (surg tech) in a
healthcare facility on or before the effective date of the law
(12/27/2020);
- OR was employed as a surg tech in another healthcare facility
within two years prior to the effective date (12/27/2020).
- Note: Staff employed as a surg tech by the healthcare facility
on or before the effective date (12/27/2020) or employed in a
similar role at another healthcare facility within two years of
this date are grandfathered and not required to have
certification.
- Continuing Education Requirements:
- Must comply with continuing education requirements specified by
the credentialing organization for certification.
- For individuals not certified: must complete 30 hours of
continuing education every two years.
- Specialty Experience:
Surgical specialties include, but are not limited to: general,
orthopedic, vascular, plastic and reconstructive, obstetrics and
gynecology, thoracic, ophthalmic, neurosurgery, organ procurement,
and endoscopic surgical settings.
- Access to Medications:
Access to medications is limited to the distribution of medication
to the nurse.
- New Graduates:
New graduates of a program sponsored by a nationally recognized
institutional or programmatic accreditation can work for up to six
months prior to certification but must obtain certification within
six months of program completion.
- Entry-Level Experience:
Entry-level job with 0-2 years of experience. Licensure,
Certifications, and Clearances:
- CPR: Certification required based on AHA standards, including
both a didactic and skills demonstration component, within 30 days
of hire.
- Certification Details:
- Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) or Technologist in
Surgery-Certified (TSC) certification required within 6 months of
program completion.
- Exception: Healthcare facilities may employ individuals who
have not yet met certification requirements if a thorough and
diligent effort to recruit certified surgical technologists is
made, documented, and retained. This applies when the facility
cannot meet staffing needs with certified surg techs. Certification
Evidence:
The individual must provide evidence of maintaining surgical
technologist certification from an accredited program or have been
employed to practice surgical technology in a healthcare facility
on or before the effective date of House Bill 81 (12/27/2020), or
have been employed in a similar capacity in another healthcare
facility within two years of the effective date.
Required Certifications:
- Basic Life Support (BLS) or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation
(CPR)
- Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) or Technologist
